› › HOW TO

Step 14: The issue with the layer
styles is that they’re applied around
the entire contour of the front of the
lighthouse; we really just want it on
the top and left edges. Layer styles
don’t come with the option of a mask,
so we’ll work around that. First, make
sure the Lighthouse Body Front layer is
the active layer, and go to Layer>Layer
Style>Create Layers. This turns the
styles into individual layers.
Click on the Add Layer Mask icon
(circle in a square) at the bottom of
the Layers panel to add a mask to
each of these layers. Switch to the
Brush tool, and using a Soft Round
brush set to black, paint to remove
the effects from both the right side
edges and bottom edges of the front
spiral shapes.

Step 15: With the edges that face
the light source already styled, let’s
turn our attention to the leeward side
edges. Add another Bevel & Emboss
layer style to the Lighthouse Body
Front layer, but this time set the Angle
to –56° and Altitude to 32°. Set the
Highlight Mode Opacity to 38% and
the Shadow Opacity to 0%. Click OK.
This gives a subtle reflected highlight
along those bottom edges.
