› › HOW TO

Step 19: The final addition to the
structure is to fill in the top portion. It
currently looks strangely empty. Grab
the Pen tool again, and set it to Shape
in the Options Bar. Trace along the
top edge of the lighthouse “cap,” and
then draw a smooth curve along the
bottom to create an oval shape. Drag
this shape layer beneath the spiral lay-
ers, and name it “Inside Cap.” Click
on the Fill swatch in the Options Bar,
and set the color to match the dark-
purple shadow color we’ve been
using inside the structure.

Step 20: Create a new layer named
“Flare” at the top of the layer stack.
Fill the layer with black by using the
Edit>Fill command, selecting Black
in the Contents drop-down menu,
and c licking OK. Change the
blending mode to Linear Dodge
(Add) and reduce the Opacity to
77%. Then, go to Filter>Render>Lens
Flare. Set the Lens Type to 105mm
Prime, and move the flare inside the
preview area to approximately where
the top of the lighthouse should be in
the image. After c l i c k ing OK to apply
the flare, the layer can be moved to a
better position for the flare.
Add a layer mask, and switch to
the Gradient tool (G). Click on the
gradient thumbnail preview in the
Options Bar; select the Black, White
preset in the Basics set; and c l i c k OK
to close the Gradient Editor. In the
Options Bar, choose the Radial Gra-
dient type, and turn on the Reverse
option. Draw a gradient starting near
the top left of the lighthouse to the
middle of the image to fade the
flare out as it progresses away from
the lighthouse.
