that’s based on the first of the five Pattern options at the
top right of the dialog. The blue-stroked triangle shape over
the image preview on the right is where the pattern is being
generated from the image. The shape is different for each
of the Pattern options at the top. You can try the different
Pattern options to see which one works best with the detail
in your image: The first four create a kaleidoscope/mandala
style pattern; the last option is a grid, which is probably my
least favorite of the five.

You can also change the pattern from Color mode to
Grayscale in the Color Mode drop-down menu. I’m sure
there’s a good reason for this; it certainly makes for an inter-
esting pattern.

Next is the Scale slider, which enables you to zoom in
and out to select a specific area of the image. Once you
zoom in, simply click-and-drag the image preview on the
right to change the area from which Photoshop is sam-
pling. Even the smallest adjustments in Scale and position
can change the pattern a lot—endless fun!

Finally, we have Rotation. This does exactly what it says:
it rotates the image to enable more pattern options. Com-
bined with the other options, you can sit there for hours on
end making cool patterns. But what do you do when you
see a pattern you like?
