Sons of

their father

Erling Haaland isn’t the only one with a famous

footballing dad. Nick Bidwell selects six more

The son of World Cup winner
Bebeto, who famously marked his
birth in 1994 with a “cradle the
baby” goal celebration in Brazil’s
quarter-final victory over Holland
at the World Cup in America.
Named after Germany’s Lothar
Matthaus, the attacking midfielder
showed a great deal of promise
at Estoril – earning himself a
move to Sporting in 2017 – and
during a subsequent two-season
loan spell at Vitoria Guimaraes.
But now back at Sporting he has,
to all intents and purposes, been
frozen out.
Some speculate he is paying
the price for refusing another
temporary posting last summer,
but the former Brazil under-20
deserves a better fate.
Sporting’s midfield play has not
passed muster this term and they
could use his thumping left-foot
shot and passing ability.

Marcos

LLORENTE
(ATLETICO MADRID)

The defensive midfielder, who
Atletico acquired from Real Madrid
in the close season, has an awe-
inspiring family tree.
His father Paco featured on the
flank for Real in the 1980s and
90s; his great uncle Francisco
Gento, another wing wizard, won
six European Champions Cups
with the club; while his maternal
grandfather Ramon Grosso was a
long-serving front-line headliner

for Real. Meanwhile, his uncle Julio
Llorente was a rugged defender
who also played for Los Blancos
alongside his dad.
Voted Man of the Match after
scoring in Real’s victory over Al Ain
in the 2018 Club World Cup Final,
he initially found the going tough
at Atletico but has enjoyed more
game time in 2020, with Diego
Simeone using his industry on the
right side of the engine room.
