or most fans, supporting a team
means sticking by that club
through thick and thin, from
cradle to grave. But in Shanghai
a large number of supporters opted to
desert the more established Shenhua for
up-and-coming SIPG.
Founded in 1952, Shenhua
have been around a lot
longer than SIPG, who
started out in 2005
as Shanghai East Asia.
However, the promotion
and rebranding of the
newcomers, in 2013,
saw their support boosted
by many former fans of
Shenhua. And these days
it is SIPG who have the
upper hand on the pitch, winning the
league in 2018 and finishing in the top
three for each of the past five seasons.
Those that stayed loyal to Shenhua
believe that their club is the one true
representative of Shanghai and those
that follow SIPG don't understand the
culture of the city. To prove the point,
Shenhua supporters will often
chant in Shanghainese in
order to further their claim
as being the real local side
in a city of 24million.
Unfortunately an early
season encounter between the
two at the start of this year’s
Chinese Super League had to
be postponed following the
Coronavirus outbreak.
