I wasondaytwoofa six-day
hike-and-biketripin GuyFawkes
NationalPark,NSW,whenmytent
polesnapped.I repairedit witha
peg,a sockandmymattressbag,
makinga splintwiththepegand
sock,andthenplacingrocksinside
mymattressbag,whichI usedasa
counter-weighttoeasepressureon
thepole.It wasfarfromideal,but
it worked.Everythingin yourpack
shouldhaveatleasttwouses.

Just Get On With It
Learning to laugh in the pimpled
face of adversity is essential,
especially if you’re up to your waist
in water and shivering with no sight
of a clear way through the bush.
