“Thehistoryofquiltingis fullofclassicblocksthathavegentlyevolvedover
thecenturiesaseachmaker’shandshaveadapted,interpretedandamended
them.Thisquiltstartedwitha sketchoftheUnionSquareblockwhich,in
itsturn,is a variationofthepopularOhioStarblock.Likemanyquilters
beforeme,I oftenseenaturalformsinclassicblocks– flowersandbirdsarea
particularfavourite– somyUnionSquareblockshave,withsomedeftcolour
placement,becomeanexoticflowerbeforetransformingcompletelyinto
brilliantlyplumedBirdsofParadise.Theconstructionofbothblocksremains
surprisinglysimilar,withtheUnionSquare’scornerunitsbecomingtails
andwingtips.I haveuseda LayerCaketomakemyquilt,butit wouldalso
lookwonderfulmadefromscraps,astheleafy-greenquartersquaretriangles
repeatingthroughoutthequiltwilltiethemalltogether.Oryoucouldrepeat
thesamecolourcombinationsineachblocktocreatea flockratherthan
