If you are new the the Bangkok Photographers Group or reading this as someone who is not a
member, you may be wondering which part of Bangkok “See the Light” is. The simple fact is that
a lot of the group uses December to take their big annual break, leaving the Big Mango just as
the weather is starting to get a little on the chilly side (by Thailand standards, at least). Even those
that remain generally have a lot to organise or are just looking to relax as the year winds down.
The original organisers, Dennie and DK, found that December walks never got much attendance,
so they made it a theme rather than a specific destination. With bright and colourful decorations
festooning much of the centre of town, ‘seeing the lights’ was the obvious choice.
While there was still a route around the best of the lights in Bangkok, thanks to our ‘walk
whisperer’ Mark, this theme-based event allows for submissions from any and all members of
the group, including those who have since left Bangkok for pastures new. That means some of
the photos featured are from elsewhere in the world, including Taiwan, Mexico, Cambodia, and
Sweden, as well as other parts of Thailand outside of the capital.
If you’re looking for the absolute best that the group can do, though, I’m afraid you’re
looking at the wrong magazine. Dennie and DK, with support from the new BPG leadership, are
working on putting together Vision 2022 - a hard-copy photobook of the finest photos taken
by BPG members this year, covering any theme and any location (within certain fairly generous
parameters). A small selection of the top photographers will also be invited to display their work
in two Bangkok gallery exhibitions. If you are a BPG member and would like to be included in this
exciting project, click here for more information.
Wherever you are in the world and regardless of whether or not you are a member of the
group, the BPG leadership team would like to wish you very Happy Holidays and a properous
2023. We look forward to seeing many of you on the coming walks.
Have fun,
Greg, Ben and Mark.
