Manic, decadent, and rebellious are words often used to
describe Moschino designer, Jeremy Scott’s work. If his design
for Cardi B’s look at the Met Gala in New York last month didn’t
grab your attention, his new limited-edition makeup collection
with M.A.C Cosmetics will. A riot of colours for lips, cheeks,
and eyes packaged in old-school cassettes, boom boxes,
and CDs, the collection is his ode to music. Tell us what your
relationship with M.A.C has been and why you partnered
with them? M.A.C has been my partner for creating the looks
for my shows for so many years. They have not only supported
my designs from a cosmetics perspective, but they’ve helped
to bring my documentary—Jeremy Scott: The People’s
Designer—to life, and their philanthropic eforts separate them
from any other brand. M.A.C is really the makeup that’s used by
professionals and comes from the origins of high fashion. What
is the inspiration behind your collaboration? Music is a
constant in my life. When I’m prepping for my show or dressing
a pop star for her tour, I put music on and we use it as a muse to
bring these diferent images and visions to life. I wanted to take
a makeup palette and turn it into a boom box, cassette, and CD
to pay homage to music. The packaging is, I think, the purest
expression of my creativity right now. What does makeup
mean to you? It is such a big tool for creating and fulfilling my
life’s work. It captures the mood that I’m trying to express and
helps me with the message. Describe the Jeremy Scott
woman. She’s always musically involved. She’s the one on stage
at the concert, or she could be backstage. What is a motto you
live by? It’s to never wait for yourself. When I was first starting
out, I would tell myself things like, that’s for later when you have
more success. I came to realise that it’s always the right time to
stretch out of your comfort zone and embrace the fear that
comes with the unknown. Do you have a favourite in this
collection? If I really have to pick, it would be the boom box, which
is my Lo-Fi / Eye Shadow x 29. It’s strong and bold with many
different colours. It really makes a statement. I wanted this
collection to ofer diversity and versatility.
