Louis Vuitton’s Speedy bag was originally
known as the Express. Launched in 1932, the
style was given a name that referenced
exciting new developments in transportation
and travel. Two decades later, this capacious,
streamlined design made its way into the
spotlight. One of its famous wearers, Audrey
Hepburn, was photographed with her Speedy
at an airport, underscoring its reputation as a
tasteful yet practical carryall. Made from Louis
Vuitton’s signature monogram canvas,
Hepburn’s bag was instantly recognisable.
The Speedy was intended as an essential,
everyday bag that was made to last, and it
remained one of the brand’s most economical
styles for several decades. Yet it rose in status,
and cost, when it became an especially
popular ‘It’ bag during the early years of the
21 st century. The sleek style also worked well
with Louis Vuitton’s dynamic artist
collaborations, which featured the work of
well-known names such as Takashi
Murakami and Yayoi Kusama. The Speedy is
among the best-selling designs in the
company’s history.
