Teaching the concept of necessity

(Maria Pardos) #1

INTRODUCING MODAL VERBS EXPRESSING NECESSITY

First of all, the lesson began in a relaxing atmosphere, warming up with a game or a
joke told by the teacher. The new grammar, in our case “NEED TO for NECESSITY” was
hidden in the context and highlighted and focused upon once the context had been set.
The Teacher starts telling a real or imaginary story about her family and highlights the
necessity or lack of it expressed by modal verbs.
E.g. My little girl’s favorite cartoon is Ladybug. It is broadcast at 7 o’ clock
every day. Now it’s 7 o’ clock, so, she needs to turn on the TV.

Or: The teacher gets a doll out from her bag. She tells the students that her
little girl uses to hide dolls in her beg. Sometimes, she forgets where she puts
them but when she needs them she stars asking about them.
After using the discovery techniques the teacher explains the students that we use the
modal ”need to” to talk about something which is imperative us for at that certain moment. Then,
the teacher introduces contexts to highlight necessity.
E.g. I can’t find my glasses. I need them to read.

Then, the teacher gives the students the opportunity to practice the point in a controlled
exercise.
Students are asked to write about Dan*s necessities when he starts school.
E.g. He needs to buy a new schoolbag.
He needs new clothes.
He needs to find a new laptop.
