I appreciatethatthe

marketis notovercrowded

withstereocamerasnow

thattheFujidigitalstereo

seemstohavebeen

discontinuedandevenon

eBay,analogcamerasare

rare.Oneproblemwhen

usingeitheranalog/digital

stereois thatviewingthe

resultantimagesrequires

additional apparatus, either

a viewerortwo-coloured

spectacles,butonceyou

havelookedat a good

stereoimagetheycan

becomeaddictive.

Fortunately,withtherapid

growthof high-megapixel

cameras,thesecond-hand

marketis floodedwith

simplecompactcameras,

withwhichasa matched

paircanformthebasisof

anexcellentDIYdigital

stereocamera.Thepicture

belowshowssucha design,

employinga pairof Fujifilm

FinePixE510cameras.It

tookmelessthantwo

weeksoneBaytogetthe

pair,at a totalcostof £17.

Withsucha design,it is

obviousthatthelens

spacingis greaterthatthe

usual65-70mmfoundon

professionalcameras.With

theinterocularspacingof

110mmonthisexample,

weareenteringtherealm

of hyperstereowhichis

perfectforanyshotsabove

twometresandprovidesa

stunninglandscapeshot.

Processingtheresultsis

veryeasyusinganyfree

anaglyph(twocolour)

softwaresolutions.I use

Z-Anaglyphwhichenables

simpleregistrationof the

leftandrightimagesand

canprovidea goodA

print,evenwiththe5MP

limitof theE510.The

imagesmaynotwina

placein APOY,butasa

starting point into the world

of stereophotographyit is

a simple,low-costoption

allowingustoexplorethe

Cinderellabranch.

whatcouldbedone

byeventhemost

accomplishedof hand

printers.Maybeif someone

wastomarketa product

thatreplicatedonlythe

skillsthatwerepractisedin

thepre-digitalera,this

mightgosomewayto

levellingtheplayingfield

andquietenthenaysayers.
