I RECKON this clematis has earned
its place in my garden. I wanted to
introduce some height into an area that
was fairly bare with no soil for planting.
I potted a clematis called ‘Arabella’ and
then realised that it was an herbaceous
type and doesn’t have tendrils! So I used
a metal obelisk as a support and hooked

Helping hand for clematis

I RECENTLY visited the Chatsworth
Flower Show and bought this lovely
potted catmint (nepeta). My cat
Rosie has given it her seal of approval
and sits next to it every day. Perhaps
she’s guarding it from other cats!

I BOUGHT this amaryllis in early
December, but it didn’t flower. I bought
three others at the same time and they
did flower, so I thought it was a dead
or damaged bulb.
In January, I put the bulb in the
greenhouse, watered and fed it, and
noticed a flower bud appearing in May.
I brought it indoors and it produced four
fantastic flowers in May and early June.
The blooms are much bigger than any
amaryllis I’ve had flower at Christmas
time, so maybe it just preferred the
warmer conditions.

the stems through the wires – it has
since romped away and done its job!

Wendy says: This delicate support is
ideal for your semi-herbaceous variety,
Pam. Clematis really are tops!

“I realised it didn’t have
tendrils to climb”

I GET through a lot of gloves, wearing
out one hand only. I use the right hand
for holding my trowel. My daughter gave
me this durable pair with a right-hand
claw for digging, and they’ve been great.
