03/19 E AIRBRUSH STEP BY STEP 15
Iryna Bershadska | INTERVIEW
Iryna: The fi rst real surfers I ever saw were here in Califor-
nia. That was in Huntington Beach. I immediately wanted to
try it out myself. When you’re surfi ng on your own, you see
the waves from a totally different perspective. Out on the
water, they look a lot different than when you’re standing
on the beach. I love ocean motifs. I love when the waves
look right. That’s very important to me. I’ve now spent a lot
of time on surfboards just to observe the waves. Using a
photo from the Internet as a reference just isn’t the same as
experiencing the waves live. In addition, surfboards are a
wonderful surface to paint on and look really good. Surf-
boards are my favorite canvas.
Georg: Are you able to fi nd more inspiration for your work
out here in California than you did back home in Europe?
Iryna: You’ve simply got more light and sun here. There’s no
cold, gray winter free of colors. But good that you mention
it – I had almost forgotten what winters were.
Georg: What would you like to share with all those air-
brush beginners out there?
Iryna: Never give up when, for example, the airbrush gets
jammed, because you didn’t know how to clean it correctly.
Keep going. Other than that, spray, spray, practice, practice,
practice... don’t just go to the movies, go partying or stuff
like that. You have to focus on your airbrush work for a
good long while.
Georg: And make sure you always check out the Airbrush
Step by Step magazine...
Iryna: Of course, surfi ng is also allowed... (laughs)
Georg: Well, at least there’s that...
Iryna: Oh, another tip: Go out into the world with open
eyes. Go see the great nature out there, go get some fresh
air, breathe deeply... Nature is inspiring.
Georg: Iryna, thank you for the chat and your upbeat cheer-
fulness.
Iryna: Thanks for your visit.
