Hugo Mac Art Colors: All-round paints from Spain

Normally, paints produced by major manufacturers have
been on the market for years. That made us all that much
more surprised when Spanish airbrush artist and ASBS au-
thor Hugo Maciel approached us to present their very own
paints under the name Hugo Mac Art.

We were able to conduct a test with the basic colors availa-
ble in the Hugo Mac Art TS and Hugo Mac Art XT series. Our
first impression of the packaging and presentation shows
that it’s all been well-thought out and looks quite professio-
nal – which already had us pretty flabbergasted. The bottles
have a screw cap such that the paint can be easily placed
into the airbrush. To ensure that the paints don’t dry out
in the shelves or on the way to the artist, there’s a type of
freshness seal on the edge of the bottle, which you’ll need
to remove in advance.

So how does anyone get the idea of developing his or her
own paint? This was our first question for Hugo, seeing as
how there’s already a rather large selection of paint on the
market. According to Hugo Maciel, it all began when he
started looking for a suitable paint for him and his students.

He wanted to have an affordable and optimal option for
those participating in his seminars.

He originally made use of the water-based paint for himself
and course-related purposes. He invested a good five ye-
ars of research into the manufacturing of paint. Since his
students were very enthusiastic about the paints, there was
suddenly a demand to be able to use them at home too. This
is how the TS and XT paint series came to be.

The Hugo Mac Art XT has been especially developed for il-
lustrations on airbrush pasteboards. It can be easily erased
and scraped after it has been sprayed onto the surface. That
makes it ideal for creating fine art illustrations. The XT color
series is just perfect with the respective reducer. You mix it
in a 1-to-1 ratio and you’ll get a very finely sprayable paint
that barely dries on the needle. The white paint also flows
very well through the airbrush and also features a delicate
pigmentation. The Hugo Mac Art XT paint series consists of
25 color hues and is sold in 60 ml bottles, each available for
9 EUR. You’ll pay 16.50 EUR for a 120 ml refill bottle.
