So Cultures – July 2019

(C. Jardin) #1
Originally, the Museum of
the City of Brussels had a
huge collection of Brussels
laces. The need to create a
dedicated space to preserve,
promote and showcase the
legendary laces of Brussels
was growing. And the lace
museum came into existence
in the year 1977.
Now it has become a one-
stop-platform to cherish the
great heritage of laces. It
presents so aesthetically an
overview of Western
European fashion from the
18th century to the present
today. And that too in a
variety of creative ways and
art forms — Trade,
exhibition, art shows...

Caroline Esgain, Director ,
Fashion & Laces Museum,
Brussels in a telephonic
interview with SoCultures
says, “The museum’s
collections come from the
private donations or
purchases and since lace
textile is extremely fragile
and requires maximum care ,
museum governs the strict
rules to regulate the heat,
light and humidity in the
rooms to maintain the textile.
We don’t keep the collections
cannot be on permanent
display.
