So Cultures – July 2019

(C. Jardin) #1

Once these walls of slums in Khar, Ghatkopar areas of Mumbai were full of

unflattering bumps and blemishes. The sights of their dull and drab walls

neglected corners seemed symbols of delusion and despair. They got a good

scrub, and a creative burst of colour with the efforts of Chal Rang De.

Chal Rang De, a first-of-its-kind initiative, is changing the mindset of

people with one colorful wall at a time. The non-profit Chal Rang De has

been giving Mumbai’s neglected corners the pleasing, colourful, happy and

vibrant makeovers.

Starting from renovating their exteriors to making the slums self-sustainable

through slum tourism, Chal Rang De also aims to empower the slum

villagers.
