World University Championships
and four FISU University World
Cups organised by cities around
the world.


The season started in late
February with the 2022 FISU
Championship Ski Orienteering
in Jachymov, Czech Republic,
the first in person FISU sporting
event since March of 2020. This
was followed by the 2022 FISU
Championship Speed Skating at
the James C. Sheffield Olympic
Skating Rink in Lake Placid,
a prelude to the FISU Games
taking place there in January
of 2023.


As winter turned to warmer
temperatures in the
northern hemisphere, FISU
Championships were held in


cross country (Aveiro, Portugal),
sport climbing (Innsbruck,
Austria), futsal (Braga-
Guimaraes, Portugal), golf
(Torino, Italy), and orienteering
(Magglingen – Biel, Switzerland).

Heading into September,
and spring in the southern
hemisphere, Maceio, the capital
of the Brazilian state of Alagoas,
played host to two FISU
Championships first in beach
volleyball, followed shortly
thereafter by triathlon. Student-
athletes from 23 countries
competed in beach volleyball
and from 20 in triathlon. The
FISU Championship season,
that saw approximately 2,000
student-athletes from 694
universities and 61 countries
participate, concluded with mind

sports in Antwerp, Belgium,
canoe sprint in Bydgoszcz,
Poland, and squash in the
Egyptian city of New Giza.

FISU University World Cups,
where student-athletes compete
for their university rather than
their country, were also back
in 2022 with four events that
welcomed just over 1,400
athletes and officials from 62
countries and 385 universities.

In April, the Italian town of
Lignano Sabbiadoro hosted
finswimming, followed by
handball in Pristina, Kosovo in
July, and then two in Türkiye –
combat sports in Samsun in late
September, and 3x3 basketball
in Istanbul in late October.
The inaugural FISU World Cup

Combat Sports brought together
multiple disciplines to one
overall event, with competition
in SAMBO, muaythai, boxing,
wrestling, wushu, and karate.

FISU’s Healthy Campus
Programme, which is a global
benchmark for healthy campus
living, continued to grow in 2022.
As of October of 2022, 110
universities from 35 countries
had adopted the programme as
they look to grow and develop
active living for students and
staff on their campuses.

The International Day of
University Sport (IDUS), held
annually on September 20th
continues to be an important
global event highlighting
the value and importance of
