university sport in countries all
around the planet. This year,
120 FISU members celebrated
IDUS in their countries and 240
IDUS related activities were
organised. To wrap up the year
for educational initiatives, the
FISU World Forum 2022 will
take place in Cartago, Costa
Rica in December focusing on
university sport as a driver for
sustainable development.


The focus now shifts to 2023
and the return of the FISU World
University Games. First up will
be the Lake Placid 2023 FISU
Games Winter, the first since
Krasnoyarsk in March of 2019,
with competition taking place
12 – 22 January 2023 in Lake
Placid and the North Country
region of New York in the United
States.


Some 1,500 student-athletes
from 50 countries and 600


universities will compete in
alpine skiing, short and long
track speed skating, curling, ice
hockey, ski jumping, snowboard,
freestyle and freeski, Nordic
combined, figure skating,
biathlon, and cross-country
skiing. The majority of venues
are in the immediate vicinity
of Lake Placid with snowboard
taking place at nearby Gore
Mountain and ice hockey
preliminary round games
occurring to the north in the
towns of Canton and Potsdam.

The Chengdu 2021 FISU World
University Games Summer have
been twice postponed but are
now set to take place 28 July – 8
August of 2023. In this Chinese
city of 16 million residents, 49
competition and training venues
will host 18 disciplines, including
the 15 compulsory FISU sports
and the three optional sports
of wushu, shooting sport, and
