We test... fans
We tried a selection of cooling fans, here’s what we found...

Things We considered
l Did the fan run quietly?
l Could the fan oscillate?
l Did it have any other functions?

chillmax air, £49.99, Jml
This is a compact little box that
can be popped on a bedside table
(it also had a handy night light). As
well as cooling, it also humidifies

  • you fill the tank with water and
it draws hot air in and blows out
fresh, cool air. It can run between
8-12 hours before it needs refilling,
    depending on which speed you
chose – low, medium or high. The
vent can be moved up or down
but the range isn’t very far, ideal
    for a smaller room.

Bionaire ToWer fan,
£49.99, argos
It was fiddly to set up the base
on this fan, but once it was fully
assembled it could easily be
tucked away in the corner of a
room. It did oscillate, but not very
far, although it still provided a
good range. It had three speeds,
all of which were fairly quiet,
it also had a natural mode (a
breeze-like function), and a sleep
mode for keeping you at the
right temperature. It
had a handy control,
which could be stored
within the unit, and
time settings for
when you want
it to automatically
switch off.

dimplex 360 cooling
fan, £59.99, argos
This had several settings, and
although it at first looked
complicated to use, it was in fact
very simple. The remote control,
which stores within the unit, was
handy at night, as was the sleep
mode which varies the speeds
throughout the night. It was a
little noisy when on high speed,
but not on the low and medium
settings. You could chose how far
it oscillates, from 30º-360º, and
change the direction of the fan
too. It also had a natural mode
for an outside-
style breeze,
and a timer
function.

dyson pure cool, £399.
This was the priciest fan we tested
but does much more than just
cool the room. Its other function
is to purify the air, removing
common pollutants from the air
in the room, and allowing you to
keep an eye on which pollutants
are in the air, and temperature
and humidity levels. The fan itself
oscillates to 350º, has several fan
speeds and is relatively quiet when
running, especially when set to
night mode. This is a fantastic
buy for gadget lovers,
or those with
allergies, but
perhaps not
suited to those
who just want
a cooling fan.
