I could see past all of that.
I knew that it could be
turned into a lovely family
home,’ she reveals.
Sarah moved in as soon
as the sale was completed.
Although the property
desperately needed
modernising, she decided
to live with it for a while to
get a feel for how it would
work. ‘The house has a real
personality,’ explains Sarah.
‘From the outset I was very
respectful of that, which is why I wanted
to live here for a while before doing too
much to it.’
Once in situ, Sarah realised that it made
sense to rearrange the kitchen space to
make the most of the garden that wraps
around the house. The kitchen prep

COME ON IN...

WE ARE Sarah Edwards, I run a home
and event-staging business, Three Ducks.
I live here with my son Ted, seven, and
daughter Elsie, six.
OUR HOME Is a detached Victorian
house in Birmingham.
MY BEST BARGAIN WAS The
peg rails in the children’s bedrooms. I made
them using pre-cut timber and pegs bought
from eBay for 37p each. The cost of a
ready-made peg rail can reach in excess of
£70 a metre!
SHOPS I LOVE ARE Anthropologie,
WA Green, Oka, Graham & Green and
HomeSense.
MY BIGGEST MISTAKE WAS
Paying more for some things than I should
have done because I didn’t do enough
background research.
FOR INSPIRATION I have magazine
subscriptions, plus I read interiors blogs and
visit trade shows.
IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING
It would be useful to have a spare bedroom,
so maybe I wouldn’t sacrifice the box room
for a dressing room now.

FIRST FLOOR

Previously, the dining table was located under this window and the kitchen overlooked
the garden, but Sarah switched these two spaces around to make the entertaining space
flow into the garden. The Avanti kitchen units are topped with oiled walnut worktops; the
Manor House Lamport stone tiles are from Walls and Floors

Sarah’s mix of traditional
and contemporary style
is obvious as soon as you
step through the front
door where the modern
dandelion chandelier,
purchased from eBay, lights
up the period woodwork.
The walls are painted in
Dulux Chic Shadow; the
runner is from Modern
Rugs, and the storage bench
is from The Dormy House

Hang curtains in front of your
front door to keep out draughts
and make your entrance
hallway feel extra cosy.

Good idea!
