REAL HOME

Leading on from the dining space, the
snug with its large L-shaped sofa, dressed
with a selection of cushions, is both a cosy
hang-out space for family time and a useful
overflow area when entertaining. The walls
are painted in Dulux Warm Pewter. For a
similar corner sofa and footstool, see M&S’
Abbey range. The limited-edition print is

area was swapped with the dining
space, so that it was possible to eat looking
over the garden. And to ensure both
indoor and outdoor spaces flowed
seamlessly into the garden, Sarah
replaced the old metal-framed French
windows with contemporary-style wooden
bi-folding doors.
By mixing modern pieces with
timeless traditional elements,
Sarah has managed to strike the right
balance between the property’s period

architecture and the requirements
of 21st-century living.
‘I went for a large traditional-style
range cooker and chimney hood, but more
modern kitchen units, because I like the
way old and new styles can blend together,’
explains Sarah. ‘And, to tie together the
prep and eating spaces in the kitchen I
exposed the brick above the units and
the wall at the back of the dining area.
I love how the original bricks that form
the splashback are uneven; they are a

reminder of the history of the house.’
This eclectic mix of old and new
continues into the entrance hallway and
the living room where timeless comfy
sofas are dressed with modern cushions.
Downstairs, Sarah converted what was a
bedroom and en suite into a downstairs
cloakroom and study. ‘I remodelled a
tiny redundant box room into a walk-in
wardrobe upstairs, too. Not many people
reduce the number of bedrooms in their
home when they move,’ Sarah laughs. ‘But
it works for us.’
Sarah also overhauled the upstairs
bathroom, opting for a practical L-shaped
bath because it had a roomy shower

Sarah has chosen to use a mix of chairs around her extra long dining table, made by
a friend, to give the space a more informal feel. Placing a wine rack and wine cabinet
in the peninsular unit at arms reach from the table helps to reinforce this chilled out
atmosphere. ‘I love the light fitting over the dining table. I saw something similar on an
American blog and searched for weeks to find this almost-identical bubble design from
Dowsing & Reynolds,’ says Sarah. The sheepskin is from HomeSense
