To prep, I power-washed
the old concrete and the
new, which had cured for a
month. The next day, I edged
along the sidewalk with a
shovel to clear away over-
hanging grass and create a
small trench. A deeper, wider
trench would have been
much better (see “Lessons
Learned,” p. 65).

To protect areas that I didn’t
want to coat, I masked the
adjoining concrete surfaces
with duct tape. Duct tape
adheres well to concrete.
Masking tape doesn’t.

Dry surfaces quickly steal
water from the mix and inhibit
easy spreading. I misted the
entire sidewalk to dampen it
before I began applying the
product. I made sure it was
thoroughly damp but not
puddling. This is critical.

I marked a bucket to indicate
the exact amount of water
recommended per bag of
resurfacer. This allowed me
to get a consistent mix with-
out wasting time.

I poured about three-
quarters of the required
water into the bucket,
poured in a little resurfacer
and mixed with a heavy-duty
drill. Then I gradually added
more resurfacer, mixing each
time. Finally, I poured in the
last of the water and blended
the mix thoroughly. After let-
ting the mix sit for a few min-
utes, I mixed one last time.
