What’son
A
s Moneypenny in the
James Bond films, Naomie
Harris has faced her fair
share of dramatic moments. But
now she’s uncovering shocking
revelations of her own as
she explores her ancestry for
Who Do You Think You Are?
First, she visits her father,
Brian Clarke, to learn about her
paternal grandparents Barbara
and George, who came to
the UK from Trinidad.
‘My dad wasn’t part of
my life growing up, so
I know zilch,’ explains
Naomie. ‘I didn’t
even know my
grandparents’
names. It blows my
mind to find out.’
George was born
in Grenada, so
Naomie travels there
and is horrified to learn that her
four‑times great‑grandfather
James Langdon was a slave
overseer and, after slavery was
abolished in 1834, managed
a plantation where the workers
were classed as ‘liberated
Africans’ but were tied to
contracts and couldn’t leave.
‘Learning James was
involved in the slave
trade is repugnant,’
says Naomie.
Heading to
Jamaica, Naomie
then investigates
the roots of her
beloved maternal
grandfather
Josceyln Harris and
also traces her five‑times
great‑grandmother Elizabeth
Leevers, who was born in
Africa and then brought to
Jamaica as a slave. Naomie
was thrilled to discover that
Elizabeth survived through
the abolition of slavery.
Heritage
‘Hopefully she lived as a
free woman,’ smiles Naomie.
‘I’m so grateful for all of
my ancestors’ sacrifices.
Without them, I wouldn’t
be here. I’m glad they’re
getting remembered.’ n
