ACTION DRAMA

The Shallows HHHH
9.00pm-1 0.4 5 p m Fi l m 4
Lone surfer Blake Lively travels to
a remote Mexican cove, but it’s the
feeding ground for a great white
shark. Their first encounter leaves
her stranded on a tiny rock 200
yards from shore, with high tide
coming. But medical
student Lively makes a
resilient and resourceful
heroine and the end result
is a heart-stoppingly tense
thriller. (2016; Cert 15).

Midnight HHHH
Special
11.00pm-12.45am BBC2
A father (Michael Shannon)
snatches his son (Jaeden
Lieberher) from the cult that
regards him as its prophet. Joel
Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst
and Adam Driver are also
caught up in the weird
goings-on in this
enigmatic and involving
sci-fi thriller. (2015; Cert 12).

The Third Man 5
12.40pm-2.20pm BBC2
This famous thriller will always be
remembered for Orson Welles’
portrayal of black marketeer Harry
Lime. He’s only on screen for about
10 minutes, yet he dominates this
tangled tale of corruption
and intrigue set in post-war
Vienna. Joseph Cotten is
an old friend on his trail
and Alida Valli the woman
he left behind. (1949; Cert PG).

Brothers’ Nest HHHH
From Thursday 1st August
(9.45pm-11.35pm) Sky Cinema Premiere
Brothers Shane and Clayton
Jacobson cast a cool eye on the
absurdities of human folly and
greed in this black comic thriller,
playing two brothers plotting to
murder their stepfather. Their film
has a cruel streak of irony,
reminiscent of films by another
sibling duo – the Coen Brothers’
Blood Simple and Fargo.
But it also has a powerful
emotional undertow, as
the tetchy brothers slowly
reveal the family history of
dysfunction. (2018; 15)

Dunkirk
On demand Amazon Prime Video^5
Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance
and Kenneth Branagh head the
cast of this immersive epic about
the wartime evacuation. This is a far
from conventional war movie,
though. Instead of Hollywood
heroics, we are plunged
directly into the chaotic
attempt to rescue
thousands of Allied troops
from the beaches in 1940
France. (2010; Cert 12).

Mrs Doubtfire HHHH
4 .1 0 p m-6.35pm Film4
After divorcing his wife Sally Field,
actor Robin Williams is so
desperate to see his three children
that he disguises himself as a
dowdy Scottish matron to get a job
as their nanny. Complete with
Oscar-winning make-up,
Williams does a
sensational cross-
dressing turn in this sweet
and delightful family
comedy. (1993; Cert PG).

The Fugitive 5
9.00pm-11 .4 0 p m IT V4
An expertly crafted reboot of the
1960s TV series which pits
Harrison Ford’s innocent man on
the run against Tommy Le e
Jones’ US marshal. As well as the
nail-shredding action sequences,
the battle of wills between
the two leads – as they play
a high-stakes game of
cat-and-mouse – will keep
you on the edge of your
seat. (1993; Cert 15).

The Departed HHHH
10.45pm-1 .4 0 a m IT V4
Director Martin Scorsese remakes
the Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs,
and delivers a riveting gangster
drama while eliciting explosive
performances from Matt Damon
and Leonardo DiCaprio. They are
Boston cops and, while
Damon spies for sadistic
mob boss Jack Nicholson,
DiCaprio is working deep
undercover as one of his
henchmen. (2006; Cert 18).
