Manual exposure mode is also
recommended when using electronic
flash. If you were to use Aperture
priority mode with flash for example,
and the ambient light is low, the camera
will use a very slow shutter speed
which will cause a ghost image (double
image) – one from the flash and the
other for the low ambient light.
Manual exposure and
Auto ISO
Here’s a tip for manual exposure
lovers. Let’s say that you wish to use a
constant aperture – the ‘sweet spot’ –
and a constant high shutter speed (to
prevent hand shake) all the time. So
we’ll assume that you always want to
use, say, f/8 (your sweet spot aperture)
and 1/1000 sec (the shutter speed at
which you feel comfortable that your
hand won’t shake). You can use this
exposure combination in all lighting
situations if you set your camera to
Auto ISO. Once set, the camera will
change only the ISO sensitivity. If the
light is bright, the camera will select a
lower ISO; if the illumination drops, the
camera will automatically compensate
that light loss by increasing the ISO.
You can also set the limits for the Auto
ISO. For example, if you know that your
camera gives you unaccepatbly noise
images after say, ISO 3200, then you
can set the upper limit to the Auto ISO
at ISO 3200. Please do check your user
manual about any limitaions of the
Auto ISO feature. Also keep in mind that
on some makes of D-SLRs, exposure
compensation feature does not work in
manual exposure mode.
Conclusion
It’s important to be conversant with
all the exsposure modes that your
camera provides. It’s also important
to understand how the exposure
compensation feature works and when
to use it. I would also add that you
should be very familiar with all the
metering modes too. Every feature
in your camera can be considered
similar to a link in a chain. If a single
link in a chain is weak, then the entire
chain is weak. So is the case with
your camera; not knowing about any
feature or how the feature works, can
be detrimental to your progress as a
photographer. |SP
