thought drones were just those annoying things that grounded fl ights and

messed up holiday plans? well, this summer drone technology is taking

EAUTY AND TECHNOLOGY
have always made for a pretty
partnership, and the latest geek
chic innovation is extremely
clever, taking inspiration from
drones. But we’re not talking
fl ying beauty products here! More like a
swathe of new beauty formulations that target
specifi c skincare concerns with laser-like
precision – much like how drones home in
on a target.
‘Cosmetic drone technology is essentially a
delivery system,’ explains Candice Gardner,
education manager for Dermalogica
(dermalogica.co.uk). ‘It allows skincare
formulas to target specifi c cells to deliver
active ingredients.’
Inspired by traditional drones – aerial
devices that can home in on set targets – for
the fi rst time, the cells that build healthy skin
barriers can take delivery on exactly the active
ingredients they need. Of course, you may
well already be using products containing
active ingredients, but these new formulas are
very much an upgrade.
‘While active ingredients are a vital part of
an effective skincare routine, applying them
topically usually means variable penetration
and a rather hit and miss affair in terms of
getting to where they are really needed,’ says
Candice. ‘Drone technology allows us to be
very precise: getting the right ingredient to

the right target cell. The primary benefi t is
that you get the maximum amount of active
ingredient working on the correct cell or
youth-enhancing process.’

Another benefi t of this is not having to rely
on having such high percentages of active
ingredients, such as vitamin C, in products:
results can be achieved with less product as
what’s in it is being used more effectively.
This is particularly helpful to anyone with a
sensitivity to certain ingredients, as they will
now be able to tolerate them to reap the
rewards. ‘For example, if you are prone to
irritation, drone delivery systems for
potentially irritating ingredients such as
vitamin C may be worth trying now,’ reveals
Dr Alexis Granite, consulting dermatologist
for Kiehl’s (kiehls.co.uk). ‘Allowing
ingredients to be delivered more
specifi cally to their intended target helps to
minimise potential side-effects, while
optimising absorption, even of
lower-strength formulations.’
And the lower the strength of actives
required, the more can be combined –
previously there wouldn’t be room for lots of
high-strength actives, but now with drone
zone technology, multiple lower-strength
actives can work together, helping you
address more than one skincare need.
