A Mercedes-Benz
500SL that was
originally owned by
motor racing legend
Sir Stirling Moss
fetched £30,375 when
it crossed the block
during H&H’s summer
auction at the Imperial
War Museum, Duxford
on June 19. Sir Stirling
specified several
special-order options
for the silver-coloured
convertible, including
a detachable hardtop
and a storage stand,
both of which were
included in the sale.
Registered “7SM”
during his ownership,
the car is powered by
a 5-litre, 326
horsepower, V8 engine
and can reportedly hit
over 150mph.

EFFORT

Geneva will see a mysterious sale as the State has tasked
Bonhams with selling 25 modern supercars, hypercars and luxury
motorcars with a combined estimated value of more than
€12 million. The auction, taking place at the Bonmont Golf &
Country Club by Lake Geneva, will include one of nine Lamborghini
Venenos built to celebrate the marque’s 50th anniversary. It’s tipped
to fetch up to €5 million, while other cars in the no reserve sale on
September 29 include a Ferrari La Ferrari hybrid (€2.3 million to
2.5 million), an Aston Martin One-77 (€1.2 million to 1.6 million) and a
Bugatti Veyron (€600,000 to 800,000). bonhams.com

RM Sotheby’s will stage its first
auction in Portugal on September
21 when it will offer the
remarkable Sáragga Collection of
130 classic cars—all of which will
be sold without reserve. Built up
over a 30-year period, the
collection covers 55 marques and
spans more than a century, with
the oldest car dating from 1911
and the most recent being a 2017
Aston Martin V8 Vantage AMR,
only 200 examples of which were
built. The sale will take place close
to the stylish resort of Comporta,
south of Lisbon and includes
many cars that have been in
Portugal since new. Among the
highlights are a 1973 Porsche 911
Carrera RS 2.7 and a 1966
Mercedes-Benz 600 sedan, which
features a unique glass roof
conversion carried out by the
celebrated French coachbuilder
Henri Chapron (of Citroën DS
Décapotable fame). Estimates
range from €10,000 to 800,000.

Sale of the
CENTURY

1962 Triumph TR6SS
motorcycle that was
originally owned by Bud
Ekins—the stuntman who carried out the
famous fence jump on behalf of Steve McQueen in The
Great Escape—fetched a record £97,750 at a Bonhams
classic bike sale in Staffordshire on April 27. The filming
of the movie in Germany coincided with the 1962
International Six Days’ Trial at Garmisch
Partenkirchen, so Ekins decided to take part, winning a
gold medal on a bike supplied to him by Triumph. It was
sold with the rider’s ISDT cup and an original poster for
the event, which took place in torrential rain, making
the already gruelling course “a morass of mud”.
