Leuba is a Swiss-Guinean

photographer whose work has

been published in numerous

publications including The

New Yorker and Vice. Her work

for La Prairie explores the

expression of time through the

viewer’s impression of it. “I

subtly layer my mixed heritage

within my photography. The

graphic elements and colour

are influenced by my African

origins but the fashion aesthetic

connects to my European

experience in Lausanne.”

For this collaboration, Simond,

the winner of the 2018 Swiss

Design Award, shot intimate

portraits of young women.

These, she says, were “real

women, not models, because

I wanted it to be unaffected,

natural and authentic”. She

photographed her subjects

in various emotional states:

“Since the ‘male gaze’ tends

to be about objectification,

I wanted to show the ‘female

gaze’, which leans towards

i nt ro s p ec t ion .”

In her series, the prize-winning

Droz, who has exhibited

in Paris and Switzerland,

transforms photographs into

mirrors, reflecting the viewer’s

gaze back to them. “My work

is very abstract. I decided to

turn the gaze back towards the

observers, so that they can see

themselves through my work

and thereby become part of

the art. It is a new approach

to photography which follows

the concept of Constructivism

or Bauhaus.”
