Great Knot
Binomial Name: Calidris tenuirostris
The Great Knot is a rare migratory shorebird in the bird list of Bangladesh. Their breedinghabitat is in the Tundra region of northeastern Siberia. They migrate to the coasts of South
Asia, including Bangladesh, in search of warmth, shelter and food in winter. In winter, they
usually roam the shores of the Chittagong, Barishal and Khulna divisions of Bangladesh inmedium-sized flocks, sometimes in mixed flocks of other beach-foraging birds. They search
for food by walking slowly in little water and mud, inserting their beaks into the sand andmud. Snails, insects and other small marine animals are their favourite food. During the
breeding season in June-July, they build nests on the mountain tops of Siberia and lay
their eggs.
