Birds of the Sundarban

(Foridi Numan) #1

Red-necked Stint
Binomial Name: Calidris ruficollis
The Red-necked Stint is Bangladesh's most common migratory bird. They come to this
country from distant Siberia with tiny wings. In winter, it is found in coastal creeks of theBarisal, Chittagong, and Khulna divisions, salt sand islands, and tidal mudslides. They
usually roam in association with other small birds on the coast. They run and eat with theirbeaks stuck in the mud—tiny insects and their larvae, earthworms, shrimp, and other
invertebrates are their food. During high tide, huge flocks of birds rest on one leg. During
the May-June breeding season, Siberia lays its eggs by digging holes in the ground andspreading its leaves.
