Whimbrel
Binomial Name: Numenius phaeopus
The Whimbrel is a common migratory bird in Bangladesh. In winter, it roams in coastalmudflats, lagoons, mangrove forests and paddy fields near the coast of Barisal, Chittagong
and Khulna divisions. They usually walk alone or in small flocks along the water's edgeand eat by dipping their lips in water or mud. Their diet includes shrimp and marine
invertebrates. During breeding, they eat terrestrial insects, earthworms, small vertebrates,flowers, and juicy fruits. During the breeding season, small plants in the tundra of the
northern hemisphere lay their eggs by making nests with grass and algae in the covered
soil.
