Common Tern
Binomial Name: Sterna hirundo
The Common Tern is an uncommon migratory bird
of Bangladesh. In winter, in search of warmth andfood, they take shelter in countries south of the equator,
including Bangladesh. They usually flock to coasts, estuaries, rivers, or harbours. It floats in the air slightly
above the water and collects food from the water by
grasping. Their favourite foods include small fish, shrimp, snails, and aquatic insects. June to July is their breeding
season. Meanwhile, in Tibet and Siberia, they move the sandbetween the damp grass and weeds near the water and lay their
eggs.
