Floral projects can be monochromatic too!
By Jo Firth-Young

S

ummer is here and I love seeing all the vibrant colours of flowers everywhere.
Mother Nature does an amazing job every year doesn’t she? I really like
seeing the flowers in their natural habitat with their green foliage but there is
something dramatic about them placed against black and white.
It makes for a really striking arrangement and makes the
colours pop.
The idea of flowers mixed with black and
white was the inspiration for my project. I
like to see white space in my designs -
this time I wanted to create detail and
texture in that white space.
My substrate is a recycled/
upcycled wood shadow box
bought in a ‘seconds’ sale. I
lightly sanded the surface to
remove any ridges created
by the original design. I
decoupaged the entire surface
(and some of the side panels)
with pieces of vintage book
pages, gluing them down with
Matte Mod Podge which I also
used to seal the surface. The next
layers, shown in the step-outs,
involved paint and Grunge Paste
so I made sure the substrate was
thoroughly dry before moving on to
these.
Top Tool...
A good white gel pen

  • a touch of white
    doodling can make a
    design pop!
