1 Start by adhering a piece of book paper to your base. Use
double sided adhesive sheet. Ring the words you want to
use to your poem or story. It doesn’t have to make sense,
that is what Dadaism is all about!

2 Paint the page using white gesso, except the ringed words.
Hide the seam between the book paper and background
with some brush strokes, too. For full coverage use a couple
of layers.

3 Finish the piece with watercolour and stamping. You can
also ring the words again using a pencil or a watercolour
pencil. If you want the poem to be the highlight, don’t use
bold colours or high contrasts in stamping and colouring.

1 Ink your stamp and stamp using Archival Ink. I used Jet
Black, but if you want to highlight the text more, try Watering
Can or even a lighter shade. Cut the design loose.
2 Use a gel medium to collage your image to the background.
Sandwich the image between layers on the medium.
Remember to clean your brush well! Let dry or use a heat
tool carefully.
3 Colour the image using alcohol markers or other translucent
pens. The gel medium layer protects the ink from reacting
with the markers. If you want to use watercolours, add a
layer of clear gesso first. Highlight with white Posca marker.

technique 2:

Dada poetry

This is a perfect way to break a blank
page. The poem you end up with
might spark the idea for the whole
project, and you can always cover
the poem later, if you want to.

technique 3:
that extra Fling
Stamping on top of the book
paper immediately gives your
image something extra. The text
might be lost in the stamped lines,
but the texture of the words is still
visible.
