America’s Cup rivals Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing went

head-to-head o Newport, Rhode Island, in 2004, sailing in the one-

o UBS Trophy, Newport’s first taste of Cup-style racing since losing

the Auld Mug to the Australians in 1983. Ernesto Bertarelli’s Alinghi,

2003 America’s Cup winner, lost to the Larry Ellison-led squad in the

exhibition regatta. The rematch also marked the beginning of the end

for New Zealand skipper Russell Coutts’s time with Alinghi. Coutts

was sacked and left the team shortly thereafter.
