The Bruce Farr-designed
Maxi 80 one-designs Le Defi,
skippered by Jules Mazar,
and Alinghimax, helmed by
Ernesto Bertarelli in the 1999
Adecco Maxi One Design World
Championship. The three-
month series connected France,
Holland, Germany, Sweden and
Norway before finishing with
the Fastnet Race in England.
Ludde Ingvall’s Skandia won the
series and the 600,000 Swiss
franc purse.

Tom Blackaller’s spirit remains
in San Francisco Bay with
a named race buoy oŽ
St. Francis YC. Inducted into
the National Sailing Hall of
Fame in 2013, Blackaller was a
two-time Star World Champion
and three-time America’s
Cup campaigner. His full-tilt
attitude and lifestyle, as well
as his silver mane, made him
revered and admired on and
oŽ the water.

The 20-foot fiberglass B-Lion
one-design catamaran from
Dave and Jerry Hubbard was
submitted to Popular Boating
Magazine in 1965 as an
International Yacht Racing
Union doublehander. Built
by the American Fiberglass
Corporation in Norwalk,
Connecticut, a new boat sold
for $1,995. Its brief popular-
ity was soon eclipsed by the
Tornado Catamaran introduced
a few years later.
