Laser sailing in the late 1970s.
The regatta travel spirit
was alive and well, and from
this generation came many
of today’s most success-
ful sailors. A simple boat that
demands technique, the Laser
has yet to be eclipsed in num-
bers and international scope.

The NOOD Regatta, Sailing
World’s coast-to-coast regatta
series, started in Newport,
Rhode Island, in 1988,
before expanding the three-
day race-and-party model
to: St. Petersburg, Florida;
San Diego; Annapolis, Maryland;
Los Angeles; Chicago; Detroit;
Marblehead, Massachusetts;
Larchmont, New York;
Galveston, Texas; Seattle; and
Toronto. The Motor City stop of
the NOOD was a sta‘ favorite
because of Detroit’s enthusi-
astic sailors, its eclectic fl eets
and its short sailing season,
which guaranteed a thirsty
crowd at host Bayview YC.

Buddy Melges, a supremely
talented, entertaining and
beloved champion of the
Midwestern Scow scene, was
fast on water hard and soft;
the family speed genes passed
to sons Hans and Harry—17
and 18 at the time, respec-
tively. Melges is captured
checking backstay tension
at the 1982 Sailing World Hall
of Fame Regatta in Newport,
Rhode Island.

The Chicago PHRF racing
scene is legendary for its war-
horses and thirsty sailors,
particularly in the robust and
eclectic PHRF fl eets of the
1980s and 1990s. The cap-
tion for this fi le photo reads,
“Dick Jennings, skipper of the
Santa Cruz 70 Pied Piper, gives
instructions to a calm crew.”
