line-up.Ittakesup littlemorespaceon theroadthan the1Series
hatchback,butunlikethe original X1, thissecond-generationversion’s
proportionsgiveareal‘big-car’ look, and theraised groundclearance
providesahigh drivingposition–akey attraction of an SUV.
sDriveversionsofthe X1 arefront-wheel drive, while xDrivemodels
haveBMW’sfour-wheel-drivesystem.Allversionsare goodfuntodrive,
thankstosurefootedsuspension and precisesteering, and thecar
feelsequally at home intown, onatwisty B-roador on the motorway.
The interioris typical BMW,whichmeansimpressivequality,but not
muchflair.However, everythingiseasytooperateand there’s decent
storagein the doorbins,agood-sizedgloveboxandgenerousspace
under thecentral armrest.There’s enough headandlegroomforfront
andrear occupants, while the bootis reasonablysizedat505 litres.
Fold the 40:20:40split rear seats flat, and thisexpandsto1,550 litres.
Thereare four trimsto choose from and allcarsfeature satnav,
air-con, alloysand BMW’s ‘remoteservices’ smartphone app, which
enablesyoutocheckyourcar’sstatus remotely.Safety shouldn’t
beaconcern,with the X1 achievingafive-star EuroNCAPscore.
