THE latest Jeep Compass isbased on theplatformused forthe Jeep

Renegade and Fiat 500X,butiss tret ched by about sevencentimetres.

It has its sights set ontemptingbuyers awayfromagrowingraftof

compact SUV rivals, includingthe Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai.

The latest Compass certainlyisn’t thebudgetcaritwas previously,

butstill looksreasonable value whenyoutakethe bigleapforward in

buildquality intoaccount .The interioris well assembled, and seems

moregrown-up than that of the smallerJeep Renegade, butitd oesfeel

abit cheap, and switchgearborrowedfromsmall er Fiats doesn’t help.

There’sfarmorelegro om than inaRenegade and headro om isn’t

toobad either,eventhoughpassengers sitrelatively upright.The

438-litreboot is quiteabit bigg er than theRenegade’s 351 litres,

butcan’t quitematch the 520-litrePeugeot 3008 or theSEAT Ateca,

whichonlytrails the 3008by 10 litres.The Compass winsback points

with apractical andvers atile flat loadingfloor,though.

There’sachoiceoftwo 1.4-litrepetrol engines,with 138bhp and

front-wheel drive, or 168bhp andfour-wheel drive.We’d recommend

the 1.6 or 2.0-litrediesel sinstead forbetter economyand greater

pullingpower, with the 1.6 offeringbetterrefinement.
