AFTER decadesof uncertainty,there’s no doubt that electricityis the

fuel of thefuture.TheEQCisthe first of awaveofelectricMercedes,

and ittakesonthe Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron andTeslaModelX.

TheEQCisn’t as radicalasthe I-PaceorModel X,butsmooth looks

help set it apartfromthe traditionalMercedesrange.Inside, the twin

widescreen displaysofthe MBUX infotainment systemand instrument

clusterappear, alongwith newdashboardtexturesand air-vents.

Just one powertrain is availableatlaunch: theEQC400 4MATIC

hastwoelectric motorsproducing402bhp intotaland givingit

four-wheel drive. 0-62mph in 5.1 secondsishardlysluggish and

theEQCisthe quietestand most comfortablemodel in itsclass.

Adrivingrangeof around 250 milesis comparable tothe Audi e-tron

and just behind the smallerI-Pace.Fastchargingata110kWstation

cantakethebatterypackfrom10to80% in about 40 minutes.

Given theEQC’s interior,you might not evenwant to getout.Quality

is onparwith the e-tron and thereare lots ofgadgetsto keepyou

entertained. TheEQCisbased on theexistingGLCmodel, so while it’s

large, it’s notasspacious. There’sstillplenty oflegroom, though,but

the 500-litrebootis smallerthanyou’llfind in the Jaguar or Audi.
