the position has turned round 180

Call the doctor
After decades of naming convention
using first numbers and latterly
exotic names starting with the
le t t e r ‘E’, s uc h a s t he e vo c at ive E l i s e ,
Elite, Esprit, Exige, Eclat and Evora,
some idiot in the Lotus marketing
department has been at the gin.
Evija? Imagine if your other car
was a Lamborghini Urus. Imagine
further that they both broke down.
Trouble with your Evija and Urus?
You’d probably head off to the doctor
rather than the garage. Really. Get a
grip, marketing people!

Broken narrative
It might suit BMW’s current
marketing narrative to say that 85%
of 1 S e r ie s ow ne r s don’t k now t h at t he
car is rear-wheel drive (First Drives,
17 Ju l y), but it i s a l s o a sho c k i n g
indictment of the company’s failure
to explain at the point of purchase
why the cars are RWD and how
it plays a part in them being the
‘Ultimate Driving Machines’.
If Porsche found that 85% of
Cayenne and Macan buyers didn’t
know that the 911 pre-dated them
by many decades, would this be
considered something to crow about
or instead a failure to communicate
the brand’s heritage?
