eading the news this month is the long-awaited reveal of Iveco’s
new S-WAY long-haulers. Though the launch ceremony in Madrid
took place mere days before we went to press, we managed to
attend and squeeze a full report into this issue – so turn to
page 24 to find out the details. To sum it up briefly, Iveco has
paired a new cab with the existing drivetrains and engine options
found in the current Stralis, ditched the ‘Stralis’ name altogether for
the new models, and – to the surprise of those who had seen the leaked
pics of camouflaged test vehicles – the trucks did not launch with a
mirror-cam system.
Our first impressions are good and we like the styling, particularly as
it’s more than a little reminiscent of a certain Swedish cab. We also
managed to bag a test drive – but as it was restricted to a couple of laps of a test track, it’s by no
means conclusive. Whether S-WAY will be enough to convince more British operators to try an
Iveco remains to be seen, but the new truck is definitely a step in the right direction.
We’ve also been over to Sweden to try out Volvo’s new turbo compound engines. The D13TC
460 and 500 bhp lumps form the backbone of the manufacturer’s I-Save long-haul package, and
both manage to deliver a not-insignificant 300 Nm of extra torque to the wheels. The idea is the
extra grunt will smooth out distance cruising and require fewer gearshifts, which, coupled to a
tweaked I-See predictive cruise control system and other innovations, should amount to a seven
per cent fuel saving. To see how it fares, turn to page 36.
Elsewhere this issue, we have an in-depth report from the FTA’s Fleet Engineer conference
(page 16), Yule’s tough-nut Arocs logger in Big Deal (page 44), Bleach of Lavant’s delicious DAF
fleet (page 52), the UK’s first T-cab R730 rebuild (page 62) and loads more. Enjoy your read!
