£350,000 appeal.
As reportedini ssue 255, onMay
the trust agreed to allowthe
now-unique locomotive, which
wastransfer redbythe National
Railway Museumto its ownership
in March2017, to be returnedto
steam,followingastrip -downand
exploratoryexaminationat Bill
Parker’s Flour Mill workshopat Bream
in theForest of Dean.
It is in tended thatNo. 563 will not
only becomeaflags hip locomotiveat
one of Britain’s premier heritage lines
but also visit other heritagerailways.
More than £30,000 has been spent
on thecopperforthe firebox, but a
similar sum will be neededforforming
up the inner firebox.

atemporaryoutsideworking cover at
the workshop and staff have cut the
half sides outready to prepare the
throatplate andbackheadcorners.
Afew more crackswerediscovered
in the backhead during shot-blasting,
althoughat this stage they arenot
thoughttobetoo complicatedto
repair.The Flour Mill has shot-blasted
the frames and wheelsetstoo.
However, the foundationring is now
deemedto be beyondrepair,and a

new one will bewater jet cut from
solid steel.MattMcManus,atrustee of
the 563 Group,said:“Ifanyone wishes
to sponsorthis item,we expectthat
it willcome inat around £3000.Any
help will begratefully received .”
Matt added:“The frames and boiler
will shortly be broughtintothe
workshop.However ,workwill only go
at the pace at whichwe can payfor it .”
The1893-built locomotive’stender
is setto be stripped inMarchand April
next year,atN orden on thePurbeck
line.Asignificantamountofneedle
gunning isrequired onthe frames and
wheels beforethe kitofparts can be
sentoff to an outsidecontractortobe
reassembled.

THE LincolnshireCoastLightRailway
(LCLR)celebratedthe 10th anniversary
of it reopening in SkegnessonJuly 13.
An iced wooden‘cake’was‘fed ’to
the line’s Peckett 0-6-0STJurassicat
its Walls Lane station, in the Skegness
WaterLeisureParkinI ngoldmellsby
the MayorofSkegness,Coun Mark
Dannatt,accompaniedby TheJolly
Fisherman, the local mascot.
The‘cake’–whichwasactually a
pieceofold railway sleeper–was
decorated by 18-year-old Horncastle
studentMillie Waby,who enjoys
baking and icing cakes,but not


normally,ones made ofwood for
railway engines!
What wasthe firstrailway in Britain
to be builtby enthusiasts on a
greenfield sitereopened in 2009 on
anew site42miles to the south of its
original Humberston location. Since
then, the track hasgradually been
extended and nowtotals¾ofamile.
LCLR spokesman John Chappell
said:“Itise xtraordinarywhathas
been achieved sinceMay 2009.
Whowould have thoughtwewould
welcomeamember of theRoyal
Family to the railway?Who would

have dared to think thatJurassic
would steam again with the help of
aLotterygrant or thatthe rusting
remains of one of the oldwartime
wagons from 1917–the only
survivor from those built in Lincoln
by Clayton &Shuttleworth–would
be transformed into adisabled
access carriage?Theline has
beenrebuilt andextended and its
historical significanceisnow widely
appreciated.”

MINDLESSvandalismreached the
WensleydaleRailway on the nightof
July 20, when thousands of pounds
worthofdamagewascausedby
youths who smashedawindowin
acarriageatLeeming Bar station,
ripped out seats and threw them on
to the track.
General manager Robert
Williamson said it appeared as if the
vandals had movedseats aroundto
crea te makeshiftbeds in the carriage.
Policewereinvestigating.
Thedamage came afterLeeming
Bar goods shedwasbrokeninto
during July,and several high-value
machinetools and items of plant
equipmentwerestolen.
