OPINION

happenoverni ght, it willbe young volunteers who will
ensureaheritage line standsachanceofsurviving in
perpetuity, and should therefore be consideredby far
the greatest resource.
Itis awin-winsituation:volunteer experiencecan
crea te or greatly boostaparticipant’scareerprospects,
not just inrailwaysorengineering but also intourism,
marketing,customer serviceand manymorefields.At
worst it shows potentialemployers reading aCVthatthis
person hasaprove ntrack record of giving adamn.
On adifferentnote, wecannotbut ha ve unreserved
praiseforLady Judy McAlpine, who sincethe passing last
year of her husband SirWilliam–arguablythe greatest
preservationistofthemall –has done her utmostto
carryon hisexcellent work. She has nowadded her
weighttot he campaigntobring theStra thspeyRailway
into Gran town-on-Spey,joini ng thegrow ing list of lines
thatrun from‘somewheretos omewhere’,and reap rich
dividends from local traders andsho pkeepers just like
thoseat Broadway aredoing sincethe Gloucestershire
WarwickshireRailway opened its northern extension.
Grea tpraise is also due this issueto the modern-day
Grea tWester nRailway, whichsold an operational Class
08 shu ntertot he AvonValley Railway forjust£1, rather
thanjustsit back andcollectthe scrapvalue forit. Itis
truly heartening to see majorcompanies likethishelping
furtherthecause of railway heritage. Isincerelyhope
manyother operators do their utmostto see thatstock
which passesintothe heritage categoryfinds good
homesto startasecond lifewherever possible.
One final note, yo u’ll see thereisaspecial free
supplementwith this edition, producedby our
colleagues onHR’ssister titleTheRailway Magazine.
We hopeyouenjoythe fascinating imagesfroma
significant erainB ritain’s railways.
