‘BlackFive ’onthe2pmGlasgowin1965
Ispentquitealot of time inScotland in 1965, not just with the A4s on the three hour
Aberdeento Glasgow trains but also on other services on thatline and southof
Glasgow to Carlisle by bothroutes.
One such runwasonthe 2pm Glasgow toLiverpool andManchester serviceon
SaturdayJuly 31, 1965.Ihad arrivedinGlasgowStEnochonthe 9.05pm from
St Pancras behindBR7PNo. 70010OwenGlendowerwhichhad replacedJubilee
No.45593Kolhapurat Carlisle.Wehad ar rived27minutes late afteragoodrun over
the Glasgow and SouthWester nroute, but hadencounteredalot of checks.
Ithen made three steam-hauled tripsbetween GlasgowBuchananStreet and
Stirling beforereturningto Centra lstationforthe 2pmtrain.
This wasbooked foraCarlisleKingmoor‘BlackFive’and we had No.45148with a
load of 10for360 tons.The train mayhave been running intwoportions asIhave
knownittoload to 13 coachesat other times.The section fromCarstairsto Carlisle
is shown inTable Five.Itc an be seen thatthe 4-6-0 didwell,despit ethe various
checks and gave anet timeof 77 minutesforthe 73.5 miles,fourminutes inside
the schedule.
On thatday Ihad runs behind eightdifferent steam locomotives namely,ino rder
Nos. 45593, 70010 ,60019, 44903 ,44698, 45148 ,46115 and42694(Beattockbanker).
My notes suggest thatIsaw manyother steam hauledtrains duringmy travels
includingthose hauledby Nos. 45235, 44972, 45364, 80002, 80018, 44936, 44668,
70008, 70018 and 70040. 1965wasthe lastyear whensomuchsteam could be seen
north ofCarlisle.
