fourwheeler.com FOUR WHEELER SEPTEMBER 2019 43
- Trail-Gear offers its Rock Slider Kit in 58-, 67-,
and 78-inch lengths. Each slider is made of 1.75-
inch, 0.120-wall 1035 DOM tubing, which is plenty
strong. We opted for the 78-inch set; it was just
about perfect to cover our S-10’s entire cab.
2. The 78-inch kit comes with a total of eight
111 ⁄ 4 -inch-long mounting legs, four per side. The
arms come flat on one end and notched on the other.
3. To determine where we wanted the sliders posi-
tioned, we used a set of 6-ton jacks that we picked
up from Harbor Freight. These were tall enough
to get the sliders positioned where we needed
and allowed us to safely move them while we took
preliminary measurements.
4. The S-10, like the Tacoma, is a body-on-frame
truck, with a good portion of the chassis hanging
down below the body line. However, the S-10’s frame
distance to the bottom lip of the cab is different.
5. The S-10’s frame changes a bit in width from the
front of the truck to the back. Once we determined
where each of the mounting legs would go, we took
the tubing over to the wet saw to cut each down to
the proper length. Thankfully, each leg only needed
to be shortened.
6. While you can weld the tubing directly to the
frame, we prefer to weld the tubing to plates to
spread out the load on the frame. An extremely
cheap and easy way to accomplish this is by grabbing
a wide section of^1 ⁄ 4 -inch flat bar from your local
hardware store. We cut ours into 3-inch squares,
which gave us plenty of room to mount them on the
frame and fully weld the legs.
