Apple Maps gets “street view”

And it’s super–smooth to Look Around supported cities

T

HERE’S A VERY obvious
diļerence between Apple
Maps and Google Maps.
While Google oļers top–down
satellite maps plus ground–level
Street View, Apple uses a
combination of aerial photos and
depth mapping to render 3D maps
that you can zoom into from
bird’s–eye to rooftop level.
This year, however, Apple will
start rolling out its own 360°
ground-level view, called Look
Around. Coming Ľrst to iOS 13, it’s
promised for the US by the end of

The enormous amounts of data
collected are already improving the
accuracy and detail of Apple Maps
generally, complemented by real–
time analysis of strictly anonymized
location data from the millions of
Apple devices constantly in motion
around the world.
It obviously made sense while
doing all this mapping to grab
high–res photos at the same time,
and the WWDC demos showed
images that were at least as clear as
Google’s Street View, with smooth
hyperlapse–style transitions.

the year — though it’s not clear
how much of the country will
be covered — and will be available
elsewhere in 2020.
The Look Around view has been
created by a ľeet of mapping vans
that Apple dispatched more than a
year ago to replace data bought in
from third parties with its own
highly detailed captures using GPS,
cameras and LIDAR. (It’s surely no
coincidence that they decided to do
this at the same time as exploring
the autonomous vehicle market,
which uses similar technologies.)

omeKit, HomePod & AirPods

updates bring new features to accessories too

eKit gets smarter this year.
ers can now support it to let you
tor all your products, and security
eras get free encrypted cloud
ge, something many makers
h ge for. There are also more
i grations with Shortcuts, Apple’s
q ly brilliant automation app, which
is cluded as standard in iOS 13.
mePod, Apple’s smart speaker,
l gains automation options and will

recognize multiple voices, learning
each user’s particular preferences.
Siri will be able to read out incoming
iMessages as soon as they arrive, and
transcribe your reply without further
prompting — but only over AirPods.
iOS 13 will let you connect two pairs
of AirPods to one iPhone, for dual
listening, and a quick way of adding
a user was demoed that just involved
bringing their iPhone near yours.
