MacLife UK – August 2019

(Marcin) #1
Over the years, we’ve all got used to
the usual cycle of operating system
updates, with each iteration bringing
about welcome improvements. But at
this year’s WWDC, though we got the
expected assortment of OS upgrades
— macOS Catalina and iOS 13 being
the main highlights — we also got
something entirely unexpected, and
it’s also something many of us have
been asking Apple to do for a very long
time: iPadOS.
This completely new operating
system caught me a little oļ guard,
mainly because I never thought Apple
would want to, let alone be able to, make the iPad more like
a MacBook, for fear of treading on the toes of its workhorse Mac
operating system. Yet here we are in 2019, and iPadOS actually
exists, giving iPad owners +check out p1: to Ľnd out whether your
model of iPad is supported) an experience that’s tailored to their
device, making the most of the iPad’s bigger screen. Features
worth noting include a better Files app, improved multitasking
with apps, and sublime gesture control when editing text. It’s still
not macOS on an iPad, but it’s deĽnitely a lot closer than ever,
and means when you’re working remotely and you don’t have
much space, there’s now a much stronger case for taking along
your iPad instead of a MacBook. But don’t take my word for it,
head over to our main feature where you can read all about the
new OS, along with all the new updates, not to mention a preview
of the newly–announced cheesegrater... sorry, Mac Pro.
If, like me, you’re slightly paranoid and constantly fret about
the internet and its associated perils, once you’re Ľnished reading
our main feature this issue, I highly recommend you take a look at
our secondary piece which shows you how to stay safe when
you’re online. Even if you feel you’re doing everything you can to
protect yourself, it’s worth reading — I admit to becoming a bit
lax myself, but now feel a whole lot better for addressing these
potential security vulnerabilities in my system. Hopefully you can
do the same too!
