Step through the process by the book: shut
down your Mac, disconnect everything bar
Ethernet and display, and connect the
keyboard and mouse/trackpad over USB. If
a firmware password is set, start up in macOS
Recovery first and turn it off (bit.ly/mffwpwd).
When ready, start up the Mac (rather than
restart), holding D throughout.
If that still doesn’t work, repeat with Alt+D
held instead, which should download the test
suite directly to your Mac’s memory.
Older Macs from 2007 to May 2013 run
Apple Hardware Test from /System/Library/
CoreServices/ diagnostics, which easily gets
wiped and not restored properly. If that’s

missing, replacing it isn’t easy because it’s
protected by System Integrity Protection
(bit.ly/macsip), and you will need the right
software for your specific Mac’s logic board,
not just the model. You can find links to
download it from Apple’s site and instructions
on how to recover using a USB stick at third–
party site bit.ly/ahtrcvr.
Newer Macs should be less vulnerable
to such problems, but when they occur
they’re still hard to put right. Most people
accept that it’s simpler just to start Apple
Diagnostics from the internet instead;
a permanent fix may require a trip to your
local Genius Bar.

Checking Mac health when

Apple’s hardware test won’t run

I think my Mac’s got a graphics card problem, but when I hold the D key at startup the Mac
won’t enter Apple Hardware Test. What’s wrong?

If holding D at startup won’t load Apple Diagnostics or Hardware Test, hold Alt+D to get the online version.
